Etiology

 • Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection

Pathogenesis

 • Inhalation of droplets → granuloma formation → latent or active disease

Clinical features

 • Chronic cough, hemoptysis
 • Night sweats, weight loss, fever
 • Fatigue, malaise

Lab findings

 • Acid-fast bacilli (AFB) in sputum
 • CXR: upper lobe infiltrates, cavitation
 • Positive Mantoux/IGRA test

Treatment

 • RIPE therapy: Rifampin, Isoniazid, Pyrazinamide, Ethambutol
 • Directly observed therapy (DOT) recommended
