Pathogenesis

  • Hyperexcitable neurons → abnormal synchronized firing

  • Imbalance of excitatory (glutamate) and inhibitory (GABA) pathways

Clinical Features

  • Focal or generalized seizures

  • Aura

  • Postictal confusion

  • Tongue biting, incontinence (generalized tonic-clonic)

Treatment

  • Antiepileptics (levetiracetam, valproate, carbamazepine)

  • Treat underlying causes

  • Surgery for refractory cases

  • Safety precautions
